Hidden Valley Bus Shelter Project on Tom Hunter Road
In 2018, the Arts & Science Council (ASC) commissioned artist Tom Stanley to create public art for the City of Charlotte’s Northeast Corridor Infrastructure Improvement Program (NECI). In 2019 Stanley enlisted artist Unique Patton, who grew up in the Hidden Valley neighborhood and who had been a middle school student who contributed to Stanley’s earlier design for the Tom Hunter Light Rail Station on North Tryon. As the bus shelter project began in 2019, Patton was a freshman at N.C. State. Her partnership in the project helped give voice to Hidden Valley neighbors in the design process. Unique Patton graduated from State in 2023 as the project was completed.
Their collaboration provided two new, artist-designed bus shelters. The artworks, Shelter from the Storm and All Who Take Shelter, contribute to the streetscape enhancement of Tom Hunter Road and neighborhood connectivity.
ASC managed the public art project in partnership with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public Art Commission.
