Chapel of Casa-Museu Abel Salazar
University of Porto, Portugal

This on-site installation uses paint, plates and a shelf as a starting point. I employed the technique of sgraffito, or drawing into wet paint, because it requires an immediate physical and visual response. The working process since my arrival in Porto has been informed by actually working in the museum Chapel and developing a conversation with what Abel Salazar (1889 -1946) had done here. Little of the earlier Chapel has been changed as these new elements have been added. Blue paint was selected to honor the dominant color in traditional Portuguese tile making. I painted the plates in the Chapel with the outside door open for ventilation. Abel Salazar also made the five copper plates displayed in the Chapel with the outside door open. I hope he was watching what has happened anew, that life and art making continue here. I wish to thank Casa-Museu Abel Salazar and its staff for this opportunity. I also wish to thank the Luso-American Foundation for their support of this project.
